It is tough. I know I had trouble finding my first job. I started sending out resumes to small accounting firms that were local in the hopes that I would fill a need before they knew they had it. It did work and I eventually got in with a small CP...

I agree with your outlook Terry. It is difficult to find a business that is willing to take the time to train new accountants due to the economic situation that we are currently experiencing. I graduated with my bachelor's in business accounting. ...

Ok, I'm not new, but this would be a discussion trail for newer accountants to post their thoughts and questions and experienced accountants to share their ideas. Might become a place for online mentoring if people are interested. Please feel free...

So simple that it's complicated

I posted a while ago about the problems with home equity lines revaluing the properties and cutting access to the lines. So we found another bank that would give us the loan we wanted (apparently our credit union had especially tight percentages) and we are moving our accounts. It could be a done deal except for the fact of our automatic deposits and payments. Theoretically we have moved all of them, but theory and reality are not always the same thing. Today we are looking for a missing automat… Continue

Coming soon to a computer terminal near you

I have written before about tweeting and networking online, but I was just at a seminar for a local practitioner group and the subject was social networking so I wanted to touch on it again. Not surprisingly, there is a lot of concern regarding ethics and advertising. People are also concerned about security and about whether they need a disclaimer on their professional posts so as not to be construed as professional advice.

uh, what's that smell?

Another computer, going up in smoke in my house. This time, I was able to easily verify the source and didn't need to call in the fire department. (Long story short - last time involved some smoke, terrible smell, 4 fire trucks and over a dozen fully geared up firemen/women checking my walls with infrared scanners.)
With any luck, the hard drives are intact. At least one, because they are duplicates as part of our back-up protocol. I expect one or both are fine. Overall, though, computers are pr… Continue

Creating a community

I have recently begun friending people here. The only way I know how to create a community is to walk around, introduce yourself, shake hands, pass out cards, etc. So that is my intent.

I asked the people whom I have friended so far (please feel free to friend me if I haven't sent you an invitation yet. The limit is 50 outstanding invitations at a time and since most people don't log on every day, this could take me a while) what they are looking for from this site. The answer so far has been p… Continue
